Catemaco
We decided to stop in the magical town of Catemaco on our way to Chiapas. Catemaco is a “magical” town in the state of Veracruz. We heard from local people that Catemaco is known to be a town where there is a lot of witchcraft going on, good and bad.
But we didn’t notice anything of that.
The only thing we noticed was a beautiful lake surrounded by green mountains. It was quite peaceful!
We stayed 2 nights in the hotel El Eden De La Victoria, where we had the most stunning view of the lake! They accepted dogs and there was free kayak use! They had a well-equipped kitchen and fridge free for use. We cooked one night there and one night we went out to eat.
The hotel was 15 min away from Catemaco and we ate right before town in the restaurant called “the Mirador”, which had a great view of the lake and good food!
Although Veracruz has a reputation of not being very safe, we never felt once threatened. We took the right precautions, like everywhere else in Mexico: not driving at night and always keeping the gas tank on a decent level.
Because of the lack of time, we didn’t explore too much, but there are a lot of natural wonders around Catemaco, like many waterfalls and the coastline is about an hour away.
If you are planning to travel in Veracruz, I would truly recommend to put Catemaco on your must-see list!
