Things to do in San Cristobal De Las CasasSan Cristobal de las Casas, or San Cris for the locals Is one of the many Pueblos Magicos in Mexico and honestly it truly is!
If you ever come to Chiapas, put San Cris on your list for sure! In travel magazines San Cristobal is often rated as one of the top five places to visit in Mexico, and for right and reason! |
If you wonder what you can do in San Cristobal, the list is endless. The town has so many colonial buildings you can visit and amazing restaurants where you can eat.
In the Centro, you can also find a lot of travel agencies that can arrange all sorts of trips, whether it is a trip of a couple of hours, a day trip or multiple days. It seems like most tourists just enjoy strolling around the beautiful streets and admiring its beauty.
But what's not to love? Colonial colorful houses surrounded by mountains?!
If you want to experience local life, head down to the “Mercado” where local people, mostly indigenous, sell their products. You can find local fruits, vegetables, chickens and handicrafts there. The Mercado is open every day, allthough Sunday it closes a little earlier.
If you always wanted to do a Temazcal, you can do so in San Cristobal. A temazcal is a Mexican sweat lounge, and often regarded as a spiritual ‘rebirth’ experience.
In Hotel Las Flores you can book your place to have a private temazcal session, with or without massage. Hotel Las Flores is located about 20 minutes from the city center, but it's very easy to get there. You just take a ‘Colectivo’ from in the centro direction San Felipe. You'll have to drive the bus all the way to the end, which is about 20 minutes.
Being in the mountains, at about 2,200 meters (7,200 feet) of elevation, it is important that you take it easy the first couple of days, especially when you fly in from a lower elevation, to prevent altitude sickness.

Prenatal care in San Cristobal
If you find yourself pregnant, like my wife, we can highly recommend a birth center, where you can go for your prenatal visits, have prenatal yoga classes, nutrition classes, breastfeeding classes and much more. If you are planning to give birth in San Cristobal, you can give birth in their center as well. All the great people that work there are very loving and considerate.
The place is called Luna Maya and it's about 8 minutes walking from the Central Plaza.

Best Places to eat in San Cristobal
San Cristobal about offers countless amazing places to eat! My wife is quite the foodie, she is from Europe and she is pregnant so that was a great combination to discover the best places and restaurants to eat.
First off, no one can beat local Street Food. During all of our travels, we ate the best on the street.
If you haven't before, be sure to try Elotes or Esquites, which you can find on almost every corner of the street. An elote is corn on a cob, drizzled with mayonnaise, lemon, cheese and chili (you can ask spicy or not spicy).
Esquites is the same thing but it's presented in a cup. Both are delicious end the number-one street food in Mexico.
We ate such good food at the taco stand from Antonio. It is not in the city center, but near the Chedraui. Tacos are 6 pesos each and they are delicious! It’s more a place for the locals, but hey, that’s the most important indicator that the food is great!
Antonio has the fire going all day to grill the meats, you can smell it from far away, it’s really awesome! He has other things besides tacos too!

For the more fancy eateries, we can really recommend Petite Fondue, located in the Mercado, just one block from the central Plaza. It’s a French restaurant, where you can eat fondue and we can say that it was delicious! There are many other restaurant to choose from within the Mercado, like an Argentinian Steakhouse, Thai food, Peruvian and many more. The place is kind of fancy, but beautifully decorated and it has lots of plants and even trees that make the atmosphere really cool!
Auto Repair
The roads here in Mexico are not always the greatest. In some areas you have to be ready to doge potholes. I quickly learned you can dodge all of them. On our way up the mountain our van took a few potholes, one of which destroyed our shock absorber. Fortunately
