Places To Visit In Teteles De Avila Castillo
We stayed for a month in the beautiful little town of Teteles De Avila Castillo, surrounded by lush green mountains. The town is located in the state of Puebla and it hasn't seen much tourism yet, though in our opinion it’s quite the hidden gem, an of the beaten path secret travel destination in Mexico!
There is a lot to do around the town of “Teteles”, like nature hikes in the beautiful green mountains, or visiting the neighbouring Pueblo Magico of Tlatlauqui, which is about a 20 min bus ride away from Teteles. We went there a couple of times, it has a beautiful, colonial plaza and it has a very coloful market every Thursday, a must-see! We felt like we experienced the real Mexico here, and so far it has been one of our favourite destinations. We liked that we were practically the only tourists here, and we made so many friends with the people of the town. My wife would go shopping every day and she loved how there fresh, local produce here. We stayed in a great Airbnb, with the lovely owner Alberto, who was there to meet all of our needs and who even took us on a really beautiful hike and also a car trip to explore the beautiful region. We can very much recommend staying at his home! Sometimes my wife did the laundry at home, Mexican style. But sometimes she went to a lavanderia on cloudy (or lazy) days. The laundry lady was super nice, everything came back super clean, nice and folded and smelled great! She even sowed a button on my broken shirt! The best months to visit Teteles would be late February through July, when the climate is mild. March and April are the best, warmest and sunniest months. It does get cold from november through January, where temperatures can fall below freezing. Every Sunday there is a market in Atempan, a 5 min bus ride away. We would go there every Sunday to enjoy the scenery and eat, a lot. We tried the typical “Tlayoyos”, a Puebla snack made out of tortillas filled with a paste made out of avocado leaves. Delicious! My wife liked going to the fish market, where she would get a shrimp cocktail. If you are travelling with pets, like us, there is a really good pet shop with the coolest people working there, who can also give you a lot of info about hikes in the region. It’s run by a brother and sister who love animals! So if you find yourself in the state of Puebla, and you are wanting to wander off the beaten path, Teteles de Avila Castillo is must see! |
