Things To Do In Progreso, Yucatán
If you are visiting the Yucatan peninsula, you’ll probably end up going to Merida at one point or another. From Merida, you can visit many archeological sites, cenotes, flamingos and also the coast. Me and my wife stayed for a month and a half in Progreso, a beach town near Merida.
For us it was the right choice, since we both love the sea and we are not so much of city people. Progreso is pretty relaxed and we felt very comfortable staying there in our Airbnb we rented for the entire time.
If you are more of a city person, Progreso might not be the right choice for you but if you would like to escape the blistering heat of Merida, Progreso is the place to be. We stayed there in the months of May and June, with temperatures in Progreso of 90s, while just 25 min away, in Merida, temperatures were well above 100s. It didn’t rain much during our stay, which the locals said it was kind of strange, the rain should start in June, but it never did.
Besides strolling down the beach and watching beautiful sunsets, there isn’t much to do in Progreso, but for us, that was fine.
We enjoyed our stay here anyways and there were a couple of noteworthy places that we’ll mention in this section.
What to do in Progreso?
Malecon international
The Malecon international is fun to visit on fridays and saturdays, when many Mexicans go out and have a stroll down the malecon. The pier on the malecon is the longest pier in the world by the way, stretching out 4 miles of 5,6 kilometers!
There are many restaurants to grab some delicious seafood and many street vendors to enjoy a slice of pizza, some churros or other things.
There is even a Belgian fries place that recently opened, where we went a couple of times. Since my wife is from Belgium and she loves her belgian fries, we went there quite often!
You can go on several attractions or take a ride on the train. When in Progreso, the malecon international is a must see to enjoy life as a local!
Elly blessed
If you want to pamper yourself in a super nice beauty salon to get a facial, a mani, pedi, haircut or even a brazilian blowout at great prices, Elly blessed is the place to be in Progreso! My wife went there every now and then and she loved it! The girls where all super friendly and the prices are great!
The place itself is super clean and inviting, unlike a lot of other beauty salons in Mexico, where things can be pretty chaotic.
Lavanderia Splash
We didn’t have a washer or dryer at te palace we stayed at, so we went to do our laundry, and we can highly recommend Splash Lavenderia. The ladies were all super friendly and everytime our laundry came out smelling fantastic!
We stayed more in the eastern end of town, almost in Chixchulub.
Da angelo Pizza Chicxulub
If you are like my wife, and almost never find a pizza good enough, than this place might be for you! My wife loves autentic Italian pizza and we found this place through a friend and figured we try it out. Oh was she happy with pizza! The guy, Angelo, running the place, is from Napoli, Italy and he knows how to make a pizza! Besides that, he is a wonderful person with a great energy that just draws you back to his place! Absolutely recommended!
